Pickney family papers, 1823-1864.

The collection consists of the papers of Pinckney family including 67 letters and 34 pieces of business and legal papers, primarily receipts, but, in addition, two mortgages (for slaves and real estate), accounts with merchants, and miscellaneous notes. Most of the papers date between 1860 and 1864. Letters deal with personal and business affairs of the Pinckney family. Discussed are their plantations, Eldorado and Fannymeade, including crops and slaves, John C. Calhoun's reception in Charleston (1833), the possibility of sectional conflict (1861), and some mention of military operations during the Civil War. Business and legal papers include receipts, mortgages, and accounts.

Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1789-1865), a Charleston, South Carolina planter, also served as lieutenant governor of South Carolina (1832-1834), and married Phoebe Caroline Elliott. Their son Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1812-1899), an Episcopal minister, was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, and became rector of Grace Episcopal Church (1854-1898) in Charleston.
